James Gollop

M, b. 12 July 1841, d. June 1911
James Gollop was christened on 12 July 1841 at St Peter's Church, Stourton Caundle, Dorset. He was the son of William Gollop and Elizabeth Stoodley. As of 30 March 1851, James Gollop lived at Bryanston Street 10, Blandford Forum, Dorset. James appeared at Blandford Court with Edward Blandford on 2 Nov 1860 charged with an assault with intent to ravish on a local girl called Elizabeth Lovell. In evidence PC Hunt said that he had been walking along Langton Road when he heard cries for help coming from the park owned by JJ Farquharson where he discovered James holding down the girl while Blandford endeavoured to commit the offence. They were remanded in custody at Dorchester prison pending trial at the Quarter Sessions. James was 19 years old 5 foot tall with brown hair light grey eyes and fair complexion. He also had a cast in his left eye, several small moles under his left eye a cut on the side of his left hand another on the back of the first finger of his left hand and another on the side of his right hand. He and Edward Blandford appeared at the Dorchester Quarter Sessions on 1 Jan 1861. Edward was charged with assaulting Mary Ann Lovell at Langton Long with intent to ravish and James with aiding and abetting Edward's attempts. In the earlier report the victim's name was given as Elizabeth Lovell. Both James and Edward were acquitted. As of 7 April 1861, James Gollop lived at White Cliff Mill Street (172), Blandford Forum, Dorset. He was a harness maker between 7 April 1861 and 3 April 1881. It was said tha a co-worker, a boy named Frank Young, had asked Thomas to cut his hair which he did with a machine for clipping horses. James assisted with a pair of horse scissors. When William came in and saw the mess they had made, he used a singeing lamp to tidy up the uneven hair. As a result his hair ended up cropped very short. Frank did not object to this but his friends told him to press charges. The magistrates decided unanimously that as Frank had asked for the hair cut and that there was no evidence of assult or ill-treatment it had been a practical joke that went too far.
