He was a miller on 18 October 1873. He conveyed 'The Rookery' in Colyton to Francis Robert Jeffery on 12 May 1874. He was reported to have taken legal action against John Sankey of London to recover £18-odd on a bill of exchange for a quantity of sawing. The defendant had allegedly passed money to his lawyer, but should have paid the court and advised John that he had done so. John had received no notice of the hearing at Axminster County Court which he understood would be a formality at which the defendant's lawyer would just make an application to represent the defendant, so objected when the defendant, who had come from Birmingham, offered to tender a cheque for £8 and ten sovereigns. As the court wished to see the bill which was still with John's solicitor in Ottery St Mary the case was adjourned until December on 15 October 1875. He was awarded £18 3s 1d plus costs at the adjourned hearing. The plaintiff alleged that he had an invoice showing that he did not owe the money but on inspection by the judge this was found not to be the case on 24 December 1875. On 24 September 1880 John George Hann was one of the four members prsent at the meeting of the Colyton School Board. After the formal meeting he reported that a handbill was being circulated in the town advertising a concert at the school. Although he did not object to the room's use he thought that the organisers should have contacted the board for consent before organising the concert and was very forceful in pushing for permission to be sought from the board. While he had the support of the chairman to hold a special meeting to discuss the matter he could not persuade one of the others to provide the third signature necessary to support his idea. He was a timber merchant with saw mills employing 25 men and 3 boys on 3 April 1881. As of 3 April 1881, John George Hann lived at Chantry Building, Colyton, Devon; This may be the same property as the Tan Yard. He had yet another accident at his saw mills according to the Exeter and Plymouth Gazette Daily Telegrams on 25 October 1881. He was mentioned in a report in the Exeter and Plymouth Gazette of the meeting of the Board of Guardians. on 4 November 1881. He was reported in Trewman's Exeter Flying Post to have been mentioned during the previous Thursday's meeting of the Axminster Union Board of Guardians on 7 December 1881. John George Hann was one of those present at the Parish Meeting on 27 March 1882 after which the Chairman brought up the instance of a letter that the Town Crier was given to cry which was regarded as scurrilous. Whilst anybody was entitled to say what they liked it has added importance if cried by the Town Crier, especially when reporters were present and it was thought that some restrictions should be placed on what he cried. John George did not think the Chairman should have raised the matter but the Chariman over-ruled him though agreed that he had no intention of including it in the minutes. Mr Kingdon agreed with John George and regarded the originator of the letter as cowardly and ungentlemanly. As it would receive a lot of attention in the press it was not necessary to vote to the matter. He was involved in an incident as reported in 29 November edition of Trewman's Exeter Flying Post on 21 November 1882. He was a member of the Colyton District of the East Devon Central Liberal Association in June 1884. He was a miller, whose mill is powered by water in 1889 at Colyton, Devon. The mortgage for the silk factory or saw mills was transferred to Mary Jeffery. He placed an advertisement in the Bridport Times on 31 March 1893. He spoke at the meeting of Colyton ratepayers called on 29 August 1893 to consider adopting the Lighting and Watching Act for Colyton. At the time lighting was provided through annual contributions from the Feoffees and the public and it was proposed that this should continue rather than by raising a Rate. John George cast doubt on whether it was right to assume that the current arrangement would continue. When a list of subscribers to the Feoffes was chekced It appeared that many people did not want to pay a rate but did not pay their subscriptions to the Feoffees either. There were also people who should have been included in the list of subscribers who were not. The Committee voted to leave the situation as it was. He was a member of Colyton Parish Council between 1896 and 1897. He attendend a sale of 1047 timber trees (including ash, oak, elm, beech, sweetnut, sycamore and large fir) at the White Hart Hotel in Beaminster on 30 January 1896. On 16 June 1896 the case of Axminster District Council versus John George Hann and Asa Ricards (timber merchants) continued at Axminster Petty Sessions. The defendants had been summonsed for obstructing Road Green, Colyton by placing timber on it. The case was originally heard at the previous court where the defendants had been given three months to remove the obstruction. The Council confirmed that the timber had been shifted and asked for the summons to be withdrawn which was agreed upon each defendant paying 10s costs. It was reported at the 9 July 1896 meeting of the Axminster Rural District Council that John George had threatened them with proceedings if the scheme proposed by Colyton Parish Council for the disposal of sewage 'polluted the river to the injury of his property.' Mrs Widgery was crushed between the waggon and a wall and received an injury to her left shoulder and a fatal wound to her left lung.
