A report in the 26 Aug 1871 edition of the East London Observer of the inquest into Edward's death stated that ten years prior to his death he had been admitted to the Grove Hall Lunatic Asylum as it had been feared he might attempt suicide. He was released twelve months later when it was thought he had been cured. On 14 June he tied a silk handerchief round his neck and was attempting to strangle himnself when discovered by his sister (probably Esther) who managed to wrestle the handkerchief from him, but two days later (in the afternoon) he stodd up, said 'I think thins iwll be may last day, and wandered around the room. He then went to the top of the sairs, took a kitchen knife from his pocket and slit his throat. He immediately collapsed and fell down the stairs where he was found to be already dead. A later search of his pockets found £400 in gold and banknotes. In 2013 this would equate to £31,500 or £207,000 dependant on whether using price or average earnings equivalent. His estate was probated on 31 August 1871; granted to Henry Hann (butcher), brother, estate value under £800.
