He was an assistant warehouseman in a heavy drapery warehouse on 2 April 1911. He emigrated on 23 September 1911 from Liverpool, Merseyside; aboard SS Belgic for Fremantle, Western Australia. As of 1916, Alec Charles Wakely lived at Swan, Western Australia; appeared on the Electoral Roll. He began military service on 5 October 1916 at Perth, Western Australia, as 7554 - Private, 11th Battalion, Australian Imperial Force, he gave his address as 'Westgate', Kwobrup, East Kattanang, Western Australia and was 23 years 10 ,onths old, 5' 10" tall, weighed 140lbs with a 33-37" chest fresh complexion blue eyes and black hair. He was called up to 89th Depot Battalion on 23 October 1916. He was allocated to 24th Reinforcements, 16th Battalion on 16 November 1916. He was transferred to 22nd Depot Regiment on 24 November 1916. He was allocated to 25th Reinforcements, 11th Battalion on 13 January 1917. Travelled to Plymouth aboard HMAT Borda (A30). At the time he was shown as a 24 year-old farmer from Kroobrup, Western Australia. His next of kin was given as hs mother, Mrs E Wakely of 'Rhondda' 28 Rifle Butt Road, Black Rock, Brighton, England. He was marched into 3rd Training Battalion at Durrington, Wiltshire on 25 August 1917. He transferred to 2nd Training Battalion at Sutton Veny, Wiltshire on 7 November 1917. He was posted to France on 27 December 1917. He was taken on the strength of 11th Battalion from 25th reinforcements on 2 January 1918. He was sick in hospital between 28 January 1918 and 31 January 1918. He was sick in hospital with pyrexia initially at 1st Australian Field Ambulance then with 2nd Australaian Diivisional Rest Station between 19 March 1918 and 2 April 1918. He died on 3 June 1918 at Mont de Merris, Merris, Somme, at age 25; was killed by shell shrapnel wounds to his neck and back whilst serving as 7554 - Private, V Platoon, B Company, 11th Battalion, Australian Imperial Force. He has no known grave - though initially buried in a grave marked with a cross at Borre - but is commemorated on the Memorial in Villiers-Bretonneux Military Cemetery. In a report on his fumeral in the 6 April 1907 edition of the Chard and Ilminster News it was said that he was a prominent tradesman and popular townsman. He had been the town's cricket club captain and also Captain of the Town Fire Brigade and an ardent supporter of twon sports. Also a member of the Town Reading Room, he had recently become Hon Treasurer of the newly-formed Unitarian Church Hockey Club. His coffin was borne to the cemetery by members of the Town Fire Brigade in full uniform, his Captain's helmet carried on the coffin. His estate was probated on 7 May 1907; granted to Edgar James Parrett (gentleman). (Estate value £1846 5s 10d.)

William Hugh Denning Wakely BA played cricket for Westminster School between 12 June 1929 and 9 July 1930. He played for St John's College Asociation Football Club between 1931 and 1932. He graduated from Sandhurst Royal Military Academy to become a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers on 28 January 1932. He played cricket for the Royal Engineers in two matches versus the Royal Artillery between 17 July 1933 and 26 July 1934. He was promoted from Second Lieutenant to Lieutenant on 29 January 1935. He appeared in the Army List as a Lieutenant, Royal Engineers serving in India in 1936. He was promoted to Captain on 28 January 1940. He appeared in the Army List as a Captain (Acting Major) Royal Engineers in 1942. He as Captain (Temporary Major) with the Indian Army was awarded an oak leaf badge for having been Mentioned in Despatches for gallant and distinguished service in the Middle East on 30 June 1942. He was promoted to Major on 1 July 1946. He appeared in the Army List as a Major (locally Lieutenant Colonel) Royal Engineers in 1947. He was promoted from Major to Lieutenant Colonel on 12 August 1953. He completed his tenure as Regimental Lieutenant Colonel commanding Middle East Land Forces on 12 August 1956. He was promoted to Colonel on 1 January 1959. He was promoted from Colonel to Brigadier on 1 January 1963. He ended military service on 5 April 1963; as Brigadier, Royal Engineers. As of 1970, Brig.
