He served aboard HMS Minotaur (an ironclad frigate) between 22 November 1902 and 24 July 1903. He served aboard HMS Minotaur's sister-ship HMS Agincourt between 25 July 1903 and 10 September 1903. He joined HMS Revenge (a Royal Sovereign class battleship) on 11 September 1903. When appointed Ordinary Seaman on enlisting on 20 Jul 1904 for 12 years' service, he was 5' 1.5" tall and had dark brown hair, grey eyes and a sallow complexion and was said to have been born on 20 Jul 1886. He was promoted to Able Seaman on 20 July 1905. He was posted to HM Naval Base Portsmouth HMS Victory I prior to receiving gunnery training on 1 September 1905. He received training at the Royal Navy gunnery school, HMS Excellent between 10 September 1905 and 17 February 1906. He returned to HMS Victory I awaiting future posting between 18 February 1906 and 5 April 1906. He transferred to HMS Victory II between 6 April 1906 and 24 May 1906. He served aboard HMS Sapphire II (the temporary name for the armoured cruiser HMS Imperieuse whilst she served as a destroyer depot ship) between 25 May 1906 and 25 February 1908. He returned to HMS Victory prior to re-posting between 26 February 1908 and 3 May 1908. He served aboard HMS Vengeance (a Canopus class battleship) between 4 May 1908 and 12 October 1908. He served aboard HMS Britannia (a King Edward VII class battleship) between 13 October 1908 and 28 October 1910. He returned to HMS Excellent for further gunnery training between 29 October 1910 and 4 January 1911. He spent time aboard HMS Victory I awaiting posting between 5 January 1911 and 11 January 1911. He served aboard HMS Venerable (a London class battleship) between 12 January 1911 and 27 May 1912. He transferred to HMS Zealandia (another King Edward VII class battleship) on 14 May 1912. He married Elizabeth Cutler in December 1912 at Christchurch R D, Bournemouth Christchurch and Poole. Sidney William Thomas Hayward died on 25 July 1914 at HM Naval Base - HMS Zealandia, Portland, Dorset, at age 28; when a cutter being used to take a hawser from HMS Zealandia to the Greenhill (a collier) was crushed between the two ships.

He ended military service on 31 January 1919; relinqushing his rank of Temporary Lieutenant with the South Lancashsire Regiment (The Prince of Wales's Volunteers) andon completion of service and retaining the rank of Lieutenant. He was a member (and later foreman) of the body giving the Verdict on behalf of the King's Remembrancer at the annual Trial of the Pyx of the London Mint which ensured that newly minted coins conformed to the regulatory standards between 1937 and 1956. He was a manufacturing silversmith on 29 September 1939. As of 29 September 1939, Arthur Day Wakely MC lived at Holland Avenue 18, Cheam, Greater London. He registered with Sutton & Cheam Metropolitan Borough Council under the National Registration Act. on 29 September 1939.
