He was transferred to HMS Fisgard (a collection of hulks at Portsmouth) for speciallist training between 10 October 1908 and 21 December 1908. He served with the Home Fleet aboard the Majestic class battleship HMS Prince George between 22 December 1908 and 26 March 1909. He served aboard HMS King Edward VII again between 27 March 1909 and 31 July 1911. He married Dorothy Greenwood in March 1910 at Portsmouth. James Bendelow went back to HMS Fisgard between 1 August 1911 and 5 August 1911. He served aboard HMS Thetis an Apollo class 2nd class protected cruiser between 6 August 1911 and 31 March 1913. He returned to HMS Victory II between 1 December 1914 and 21 December 1914. He was posted to the Grand Fleet aboard HMS Queen Elizabeth a Dreadnought battleship (which served as flagship during the Dardanelles campaign) between 22 December 1914 and 14 February 1916. He continued aboard HMS Queen Elizabeth having been promoted to Plumber between 15 February 1915 and 1 March 1916. He was back at HMS Fisgard again between 2 March 1918 and 30 September 1918. He re-signed to complete his service on 18 April 1918. He continued at HMS Fisgard having been promoted to Plumber (1st Class) between 1 October 1918 and 2 April 1919. He began his final posting aboard HMS Queen Elizabeth (then flagship of the Atlantic Fleet) on 3 April 1919. He died on 13 December 1919 at Royal Naval Hospital Haslar, Alverstoke, Hampshire, at age 31. He was buried on 17 December 1919 at Haslar Royal Naval Cemetery (grave E.39.19), Alverstoke, Hampshire.
