In 1880 he started a builders' ironmongery business which became the largest in the area employing twenty five and importing direct from england. had been an alderman and director of the local gas company. He was also a member of Lodge St James (Number 574) Scottish Constitution of rhe Freemasons, Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows nd the Congregational Church. His estate was probated on 30 October 1922; grantewd to Arthur Froome of Wallsend (merchant), son and Leonard Pridmore Waterhouse of Newcastle (public accountant). (Estate value £26,441 2s 6d.) The duty date for his estate was 11 December 1923.
