He was a director (later chairman) of the Dumfries Theatre Royal Trust (since renamed the Dumfries Theatre Development Trust) between 29 August 2000 and 21 November 2008. He was recruited as a consultant to help set up a charitable trust for the operation of eight leisure facilities in Paisley and the surrounding. in 2002. He died on 22 August 1917 at HMT Sophron (FY725) ex Steam Trawler 'Sophron' *GY1270, Firth of Tay (Linne Tatha), at age 34; as TS1242(Ch) - Trimmer, Royal Navy reserve. He is recorded on the Naval Memorial at Chatham. Medway Towns and under the Royal Navy section of the Roll of Honour in the parish church of St James, St James's Square, Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire. His body was not recovered. He was posthumously awarded the 1914-15 Star, Victory & British War Medals for service as TS1242 after 1919.
