He was a director (later chairman) of the Dumfries Theatre Royal Trust (since renamed the Dumfries Theatre Development Trust) between 29 August 2000 and 21 November 2008. He was recruited as a consultant to help set up a charitable trust for the operation of eight leisure facilities in Paisley and the surrounding. in 2002.
