He was posted to HMS Sappho an Apollo class cruiser of the Grand Fleet patrolling north of the Orkney Islands on 29 August 1914. He was promoted to Ordinary Signalman on 1 December 1914. On reaching 18 years of age he signed on for a further 12. He was 5'2" tall with a 32" chest brown hair grey eyes and a fresh complexion with scars on his scalp and back. On 1 December 1914 he was said to have been 5'5" tall with a 37" chest and have a scar on the bridge of his nose. He transferred to HMS St Vincent a St Vincent class battleship of the 2nd Division Grand Fleet on 8 August 1915. He was promoted to Signalman on 16 September 1915. He transferred to HMS Colossus a Colossus class battleship that was serving as flagship of the 5th Division of the 1st Battelcruiser Squadron of the Grand Fleet in the North Sea on 24 October 1915. He took part in the Battle of Jutland on 31 May 1916. He was promoted to Leading Signalman on 27 July 1917. He returned to HMS Victory I for re-allocation on 30 May 1918. He was posted for service aboard HMS Campanula and Arabis class sloop on 18 September 1918 at HMS Egmont, Forti Sant'Anglu (Fort St Angelo), Birgu. He transferred to HMS Heroic a former Liverpool to Belfast steamer that had been requisitioned for service as an armed boarding steamer in the Mediterranean on 29 July 1919. He returned to HMS Victory on 13 August 1919. He was posted to HMS Carysfort a C-Class light cruiser of the Home Fleet's 2nd light cruiser squadron on 30 November 1919. He died on 10 March 1920 at age 22; of pneumonia. He was buried after 10 March 1920 at Ohlsdorf Cemetery (grave 1.G.12), Hamburg, Hamburg.
