George Hann was christened on 20 October 1896 at Wesleyville - Methodist Church, Bonavista Bay, Newfoundland. He was a fisherman on 26 April 1916. He began military service on 26 April 1916 as 2605 - Private, 2nd Depot Battalion Royal Newfoundland Regiment. He was 5'5.5" tall weighed 121lbs with a 32.5"-34.5" chest. He requested that (from 1 July) a payment of 50 cents per day be made from his wages to his father on 20 June 1916. He embarked aboard SS Sicilian for the UK on 19 July 1916. He was confined to barracks for 3 days for being late for 6.30am parade on 11 September 1916. He left to join the 1st Battalion with the British Expeditionary Force on 10 October 1916. He joined his unit on 22 October 1916. He left a will on 22 December 1916. He was at 88th (1/1st East Anglian) Field Ambulance suffering from enteritis between 23 December 1916 and 30 December 1916. He was punished by one day's loss of pay for loss of kit on 10 March 1917. He was admitted to 19th (2/1st Northumbrian) Casualty Clearing Station with severe gun shot wounds received the previous day to his left knee and arm and right leg and foot (for which he had multiple drainage) on 15 April 1917. He arrived at 14th General Hospital at Wimereux for onward travel to England aboard SS St Denis on 16 April 1917. He arrived at 4th London General Hospital on 17 April 1917. By May he had had incisions of the wound to his left knee. His parents were advised that he was progressing favourably. He received a Money Order for £1 on 10 May 1917. He was included in the dangerously ill list on 17 June 1917. He received a further 10/- in July 1917. On 1 August it was reported that all his wounds had healed apart from his lknee which was still septic. An X-ray showed periostitis of the lower end and outer side of his femur and acute indocarditis and pericarditis and that his condition was very bad. He had a scrapery of the sinus and drainage of the knee on 23 August 1917. He died on 8 September 1917 at Denmark Hill - 4th London General Hospital (Maudsley Hospital), Camberwell, Greater London, at age 20; of wounds and septicaemia. He ended military service on 8 September 1917; as 2605 - Private, 1st Battalion Royal Newfoundland Regiment. He was buried on 13 September 1917 at Brookwood Cemetery (grave X.B.1), Woking, Surrey; with full military honours - a firing and bugle party from 4th London Rifle Brigade, a wreath of ferns, lillies and roses from the nursing staff of 4th London General Hospital, another (of laurel leaves and dahlias) from Mrs E Roberts who visited him in hospital and one from the Newfoundland War Contingent Association. His kit bag was forwarded to his father aboard SS Sea on 22 Jun 1918l, his personal effects having already been sent to his sister Mrs (Bessie) House. The balance in his army pay account and cash had totalled £29 5s 1d.
