William Hann

     William Hann was christened on 30 March 1719 at St Mary the Virgin Church, Offwell, Devon. He was the son of Thomas Hann and Mary Letten. William Hann married Mary Pyne, daughter of Nathaniel Pyne, on 19 July 1747 at the Collegiate Church of St Mary the Virgin at Ottery, Ottery St Mary, Devon. William Hann moved to Honiton, Devon between 1751 and 1756. He was a surety for Nathaniel Pyne of Lympstone (cordwainer) to appear at the next sessions accused of begetting a bastard child to Elizabeth Williams of Lympstone, whom Natahniel later married on 29 May 1751. As of 29 May 1751, William Hann lived at Holy Trinity, Exeter, Devon. He was a maltmaker between 29 May 1751 and February 1756. In early 1756 there appears to have been a heated disagreement with the widowed Prudence Thomas of Honiton as on 14 Feb she was bound over to appear at the Easter Quarter Sessions charged with assaulting Mary Hann and breaking and entering the door of William's parlour (surety provided by Robert Wheadon and William Burman). On 28 Feb ib a counter-claim John Reed, butcher of Honiton, along with William and Mary and Mary Loader, spinster, were bound over to attend the same Quarter Sessions charged with beating Prudence Thomas (sureties in this case provided by John Reed and William Hann on a reciprocal basis.) He qualified to vote in Honiton and voted for Anthony Bacon on 21 November 1763. He as William Hann of Honiton leased the 'Bottle' at Honiton from Sir Horatio Mann of Bourne Place, Kent (Devon County RO - Deeds 337B/89/1-9) on 29 September 1773. He advertised his intention to lease some land called 'The Commons' at Honiton on 12 May 1777. He and Margaret Lowder obtained a marriage licence on 19 September 1789 at Honiton, Devon. On 22 September 1789 William Hann and Margaret Lowder were due to marry at Cotleigh. However the marriage register is endorsed 'NB This marriage was never solemnized, the Parties coming within the Degrees of Affinity prohibited Margaret Lowder (nee Pine) being the niece of William's late wife Mary (nee Pine.) William Hann was probably the William Hann who owned property at Honiton occupied by William Coleman that was assessed under the Land Tax Redemption Act and valued at 14s 1½d and 5s 8d in 1798. He died before 29 June 1801 at Honiton, Devon. He was buried on 29 June 1801 at St Michael and All Angels Church, Honiton, Devon.
