Mary Ann Dunn

     Mary Ann Dunn was born on 28 November 1888 at Barnes, Greater London; was the daughter of William Thomas (plasterer) and Louisa (nee Leach.) As of 5 April 1891, Mary Ann Dunn lived at Waring's Buildings 6, Barnes, Greater London. As of 2 April 1911, Mary Ann Dunn lived at Vauxhall Bridge Road 208, Westminster, Greater London. She was a domestic servant on 2 April 1911. As of 12 April 1914, Mary Ann Dunn lived at The Grove (now Vauxhall Grove) 66, South Lambeth, Greater London. She married Fred Hann, son of Charles Hann and Charlotte Meech, on 12 April 1914 at St Anne and All Saints Church, South Lambeth, Greater London; was witnessed by William Thomas Dunn (bride's father) and Alice Moore. Mary Ann Dunn was arrested for the murder of her daughter Agnes Maud and taken to Walham Green Police Station and thence to the West London Police Court where she was remanded in custody pending trial on 3 Oct 1922 on 25 September 1922. In a report in the 26 Sep 1922 edition of the Dundee Courier it was said that she had been charged with the wilful murder of her daughter by cutting her throat with a razor. Their report continued with evidence given and an interview with a neighbour. At the Fulham Coroner's inquest on 28 Sep 1922 into the death of Agnes Maud it was stated that she had not slept for several weeks and was severely depressed. She had intended killing both children and herself. She was tried and remanded in custody for trial at the Central Criminal Court on 26 Oct 1922 on 3 October 1922 at West London Police Court, Kensington, Greater London. She was found guilty of her daughter of whom it was said she was very fond but insane through melancholia and sentenced to be detained at an asylum at His Majesty's pleasure (indefinitely) on 26 October 1922 at Central Criminal Court, Strand, Greater London. She died in March 1980 at Surrey South Eastern R D, Surrey, at age 91.
