At the last meeting of the Board, Mr
Loveridge (the Inspector of Nuisances)
said he had received complaints from
the people of Colyton respecting the
smoke which came from the chimney of
Mr Hann's steam-engine, at Colyton,
and asked what should be done in the
matter. Mr Hann had been written to,
and, in reply, he now wrote that he
doubted the right of the Inspector to
interfere. If he had been spoken to
privately, he would have done what he
could to remedy the evil, if there
existed one; but he would not submit to
any high-handedness or arbitrary
measure indeed, that procedure would
make him 'go behind any legal
technicalties.' Mr Loveridge said he had
received several complaints respecting
the smoke. the subject was allowed to
stand over
