He served aboard to the sloop HMS Pelican between 19 November 1889 and 19 December 1992. He was promoted to Ordinary Seaman on 19 July 1890. He on reaching the age of 18 he was able to enlist for 12 years as an adult. His records incorrectly showing his birth year as 1872 on 28 September 1890. He was promoted to Able Seaman on 1 June 1892. He was at HM Naval Base Portsmouth (HMS Victory I) awaiting a ship between 20 December 1892 and 27 February 1893. He undertook gunnery training at HMS Excellence before returning to HMS Victory I between 28 February 1893 and 20 November 1893. He served with the Channel Squadron aboard the Royal Sovereign class steel-armoured battleship HMS Resolution before returning to HMS Victory I again between 5 December 1893 and 15 October 1895. He underwent further traing at HMS Excellence before being posted to the fellowr Royal Sovreign class ship HMS Revenge between 5 November 1895 and 13 January 1896. He served aboard HMS Revenge between 14 January 1896 and 14 December 1899. He returned to Portsmouth based at HMS Duke of Wellington (before and after undertaking at further course at HMS Excellent) between 15 December 1899 and 7 June 1900. He was promoted to Leading Seaman on 13 February 1900. He served aboard the Admiralty class Barbette ship HMS Rodney between 8 June 1900 and 18 November 1900. He was aboard the Mersey 2nd class cruiser HMS Severn between 19 November 1900 and 3 December 1900. He he was transferred to the Coastguard as a Boatman on 4 December 1900. He served with Harwich (later Eastern) region aboard the Walton-on-the-Naze Watch Vessel between 4 December 1900 and 1 May 1903. He was a Coast Guard boatman on 31 March 1901. He was promoted to Leading Boatman on 10 April 1901. As of 14 August 1901, Ernest Edward George Hill lived at Coastguard Watch Vessel, Walton-on-the-Naze, Essex. He married Kate Catchlove, daughter of Edmund Catchlove and Selina Jane Penn, on 14 August 1901 at Holy Trinity Church, Blendworth, Hampshire; witnesses were Charles Catchlove, Hettie Catchlove, Nellie Catchlove (bride's siblings) and James Hill (groom's brother?) He was posted to HMS Columbine in Kingstown (now Dún Laoghaire) Harbour in Ireland the training ship for Royal Navy Reserve and North of Ireland Coastguard crew between 12 February 1916 and 5 April 1916. He returned to Chatham (HMS Pembroke) prior to being transferred back to the Coastguard between 6 April 1916 and 21 July 1917. He was posted back to the Scottish region at Drummore (HMS President IV) as a Leading Boatman between 25 July 1917 and 30 April 1919. He was promoted to Petty Officer (Coast Guard) on 5 December 1917. He , on its creation, transferred to His Majesty's Coastguard (New Force) on 1 May 1919. He died on 28 August 1930 at Fisherton Street - Salisbury Infirmary (now Pembroke House etc), Salisbury, Wiltshire, at age 60.
