He died on 27 April 1917 at South Midland Field Ambulance, near Albert, Somme, at age 32; as 2nd Lieutenant (acting Captain), 2/8th (Territorial) Battalion, Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment),178th (2/1st Sherwood Forester) Brigade, 59th (2nd North Midlands) Division having been wounded leading an attack north west of St Quentin earlier in the day. (A short obituary and photograph are on page 279 of De Ruvigny's Roll of Honour 1914-1924.) Brigadier-General McConchy wrote 'I wish you would convey to Warry's people my depest sympathy with them in the loss of so fine a son, whom I have known and appreciated ever since he first joined the batallion' and his Colonel 'He was a brave man, if ever there was one, and led his company right on to the German wire only 20 days ago, coming through unscathed. If you could have seen the anxious way in which the men crowded round his stretcher, you would have realised how much they loved him...We all loved him.' He was buried after 27 April 1917 at Peronne Communal Cemetery Extension (grave 1B4), Peronne, Somme. Two letters to an aunt and two to 'Dorothy' are held in Box 6 of the War War 1914-1918 collection, part of the William Ready Division of Archive and Research Collections held by McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. His estate was probated on 27 January 1920; granted to Winifred Sara Miiler (wife of Alan Grant Miller), widow. (Estate value £120.) A photo and commemoration of John Lucas Warry appears on page 279 of De Ruvigny's Roll of Honour. For his war service he was postumously awarded the Vctory and Brirish medals.

He served at Nasirabad between 9 March 1901 and 23 April 1902. He was transferred to Ahmednagar where on 14 Aug 1903 he was found fit to extend his service to 21 years on 24 April 1902. He was hospitalized with smallpox between 12 November 1903 and 8 December 1903. As of between 4 June 1904 and 14 September 1909, Robert William Warry lived at Woolwich, Greater London.
