Norman John Bishop

     Norman John Bishop was born on 8 March 1877 at Birling, Kent; was registered in the June quarter of 1877 and christened in 1877. However when he joined the army in 1892 his age was recorded as 14 and presumably throughout his military career he was regarded as being a year younger than he actually was. He was christened on 26 July 1877 at All Saints Church, Birling, Kent; was the son of George (builder) and Marianne. As of 3 April 1881, Norman John Bishop lived at The Street (41), Birling, Kent. As of 5 April 1891, Norman John Bishop lived at Birling Row (12), Birling, Kent. He began military service on 8 March 1892 on his 15th birthday as 9466 - Boy, Scots Guards. He was 5'6" tall, weighed 113lbs with a 31.5"-33.5" chest fresh compleaxion, hazekl eys and brown hair. He had a scar on his right thigh and buttock. He was posted to 2nd Battalion on 25 March 1892. He was Admonished for improper conduct in Barracks on 5 April 1893. He received his first Good Conduct pay on 8 March 1894. He officially attained military age and became a Prvate on 8 March 1896. He was appointed Lance Corporal without pay on 22 July 1896. He was Reprimanded for neglect of duty when on guard whilst in Dublin on 18 November 1896. He was hospitalised between 9 January 1897 and 13 February 1897. As of 1 April 1897, Norman John Bishop lived at an unknown place ; was granted Lance Corporal pay. He qualified for promotion to Corporal on passing the Chatham Military Engineering class on 5 April 1897. He received his second Good Conduct pay rise on 8 March 1898. He was promoted to Corporal on 1 April 1898. He was Reprimanded for being an hour late returning to Pirbright when on escort duty on 3 June 1898. He married Georgina Pickering on 18 September 1898 at St Mary's Church, Woburn, Central Bedfordshire. Norman John Bishop was hospitalised between 14 October 1898 and 8 November 1898. He was Severely Reprimanded for being six hours and twenty five minutes late returning to Windsor form leave on 29 November 1898. He was hospitalised between 30 November 1898 and 14 December 1898. He was granted leave for the birth of his daughter between 5 January 1899 and 1 February 1899. He was promoted to Lance Sergeant on 26 February 1899. He died on 15 June 1899 at Victoria Barracks, Windsor, Windsor and Maidenhead, at age 22; of a fractured skull following an accident in Sheet Street. An inquest was held at the Cavalry Barracks on 17 June 1899 at which it was stated that Norman had been to Ascot for the Adscot Cup Meeting and had ridden back on his bycle. On reaching Sheet Street in Windsor, which was very busy with Ascot crowds ha attempted to pass a couple of stationary traps at the same time a a four-horse brake (a small bus) was coming the other way. There was not sufficient space for him to pass and he lost balnce and ended up sitting the way he had come and was bent double by the rear wheel which ran over his body and head. He was buried on 21 June 1899 at Spital Cemetery, Windsor, Windsor and Maidenhead; He was afforded full miltary honours which left from the Cavalry (Combermere) Barracks. The cortege was headed by K Company, 2nd Scots Guards followed by the regiment's drums and fifes then their pipers. The gun carriage was pulled by a pair of horses from 1st Dragoons (sent down from Hounslow). Then followed two mourning carriages a hunderd NCOs from the various Guards battalions based in Windsor, London and Pirbright and a few members of 2nd Life Guards and 1st Dragoons. These were followed by K Company and the rest of his battalion. Three volleys were fired iover the grave
