He was received at 17th General Hospital, Alexandria from the Hospital Ship Rewa for treatment for enteric fever and a weak heart on 13 November 1915. He was sent for treatment at 1st Australian General Hospital, Cairo between 21 December 1915 and 20 December 1915. He was sent for treatment at 3rd Australian Auxilliary Hospital at Heliopolis between 29 December 1915 and 7 March 1916. He was taken on strength at base on 15 January 1916. He returned to 20th Battalion on 7 March 1916. He proceeded to Marseilles to join the British Expeditionary Force between 18 March 1916 and 25 March 1916. He was admitted to 26th General Hospital at Etaples with gunshot wounds to head, shoulder, thigh and leg on 28 July 1916. He embarked on Hospital Ship Dieppe from Calais bound for England on 9 August 1916. He was admitted to Colchester Military Hospital on 10 August 1916. He was posted to No 2 Command Depot AIF at Weymouth following recuperation at Southall on 11 September 1916. He was taken on strength at No 1 Command Depot AIF, Perham Downs and immediately posted to No 3 Command Depot AIF at Wool (or Woolwich) on 16 October 1916. He entered detention from No 4 Command Depot AIF at Wareham, Dorset to serve 96 days imprisonment and forfeit 12 days pay for being absent without leave from 28 Dec 1916 to 31 Dec 1916 on 6 January 1917. He was sentenced at Wareham to 120 detention and forfeiture of 209 days pay for being absent without leave from 10 Feb 1917 to 19 Apr 1917 on 10 May 1917. He having reported sick with scabies the previous day to 16th Field Ambulance was transferred back to Wareham on 15 May 1917. He was absent without leave (confirmed by court of enquiry at Codford, Wiltshire on 14 Jul 1917) and later discharged from the army as a deserter forfeiting all rights to any leave or monies and his right to free passage back to Australia between 15 May 1917 and 1 April 1920.
