Tryphena Sparks It is believed by many Thomas Hardy officiandos that a number of characters in Hardy's novels and poems were based on or inspired by Tryphena, such was her effect on him. She was born on 20 March 1851 at Puddletown, Dorset. She was the daughter of James Sparks and Maria Hand. As of 30 March 1851, Tryphena Sparks lived at The Village (82), Puddletown, Dorset. She was christened on 25 May 1851 at St Mary the Virgin Church, Puddletown, Dorset; A number of sources ascert that Tryphena was strangely not christened until she was 6 years old, however she is clearly entered in the register on the date shown. The error possibly coming about by someone mistaking the 1 in 1851 in the register for a 7. As of 7 April 1861, Tryphena Sparks lived at Duck Street (now Back Street) (24), Puddletown, Dorset. She was educated before 1865; at Athelhampton British School. She was educated in 1866 at Puddletwon Church of England School, Puddletown, Dorset; was a pupil-teacher. She It is said that she becamed engaged to Thomas Hardy in 1867 and perhaps bore an illegitimate child by him named Randolph. The engagement is said to have possibly been ended when Thomas's mother Jemima advised him that Tryphena was not his cousin but his niece being the illegitimate daughter of Rebecca Maria Sparks (her eldest sister) who in turn was the illegitimate daughter of Jemima. Alternatively it may have been the persuasive powers of her new 'beau' in Plymouth, Charles Gale in 1867. She was educated between 28 January 1870 and 1871; at Stockwell Teachers' Training College in London. She was the headmistress between January 1872 and 1877 at Cobourg Street - Plymouth Public Free School (now part of Plymouth University), St Andrew, Plymouth. She returned her engagement ring to Thomas Hardy in 1873. As of 15 December 1877, Tryphena Sparks lived at Lockyer Street 6, St Andrew, Plymouth. She married Charles Frederick Gale on 15 December 1877 at the Minster Church of St Andrew, St Andrew, Plymouth; witnesses were George Gale Rew and Rebecca Rew. As of 3 April 1881, Tryphena Gale lived at Fore Street - South Western Tavern, Topsham, Devon. She died on 17 March 1890 at Fore Street, Topsham, Devon, at age 38; from a rupture incurred during Herbert's birth. She was buried on 24 March 1890 at St Margaret's Church, Topsham, Devon; Her grave is marked by a Celtic cross on a three-tier base the top two of which are inscribed on one side TRYPHENA/WIFE OF CHARLES F GALE/DIED 17TH MARCH 1890/AGED 39 [she was actually 3 days short of being 39]. Images are online at www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=pv&GRid=116685802&PIpi=88451179. Thomas Hardy and his brother Henry cycled to Topsham from Doprchester to lay flowers on her grave but were not welcome when they tried to express their condolences to her widower Charles Gale in person.
