He emigrated on 17 October 1912 from London, Greater London; as John C Wakely (with HC Guy and EJ Swaffield) aboard SS Geelong for Australia. He began military service on 16 November 1915 at Toowoomba, Toowoomba, Queensland, as 235 - Private, Australian Imperial Force, having served 18 month with the Territorials. He was 6' 3.5" tall, weighed 168lbs with a 40" chest, dark complexion, grey eyes and brown hair. He was called up to A Company, 8th Depot Battalion on 15 January 1916. He served with A Company, 36th Battalion between 16 January 1916 and 15 February 1916. He transferred to A Company, 42nd Battalion on 16 February 1916. He was reported absent without leave from Thompsons for overstaying his home leave by 8 days. He was confined to barracks for 7 days and forfeited 16 days pay on 9 March 1916. He travelled to Southampton aboard HMAT Borda (A30). At the time he was shown as a 22 year-old fencer from Wallumbilla, Western Line, Queensland serving with A Company. His next of kin was given as hs father, Frederick George Wakely of Stke Abbott, Beaminster, Dorsetshire, England. He was sent to France on 5 November 1916. He having reported sick the previous day was sent to the Divisional Rest Station with mumps on 8 December 1916. He was treated at 7th General Hospital in St Omer between 9 December 1916 and 29 December 1916. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 22 May 1917. He received a gunshot wound to the head in action with 3rd Australian Division and was sent for treatment to 11th Australian Field Ambulance, transferring later to 2 Australian Casualty Clearing Station where he died of his wounds on 31 July 1917. He died on 2 August 1917 at Nord at age 23; whilst serving as 235 - Lance Corporal , 42nd Battalion, Australian Imperial Force. He was buried at Trois Arbres Cemetery (grave 1.V.39), Steenwerck, Nord; on 10 Nov 1917 and is commemorated on panel 136 in the commemorative area at the Australian War Memorial at Campbell, ACT (details of this are confirmed at http://static.awm.gov.au/images/collection/pdf/RCDIG1068842--877-.PDF). His father was later sent his 1914-15 Star and British War and Victory medals together with his memorial plaque and scroll.

He transferred to the Army Veterinary Corps at Woolwich as SE/35099 on 31 March 1918. He was posted to 7th Reserve Veterinary Hospital at Ormskirk on 17 April 1918. He having transferred to Wessex Divisional Veterinary Hospital at Romsey on 19 Nov 1918 was attached to 609 Agricultural Company, Labour Corps at the Dorset Regiment's Dorchester depot on 4 December 1918. He returned to Romsey in February 1919. He was posted to 12 Reserve Veterinary Hospital at York on 31 October 1919. He ended military service on 28 December 1919. He died in December 1955 at Sturminster R D, Dorset, at age 57.
