ROWNHAMS CASH STORES where, on visits to the village, I spent many happy hours helping my uncle Phil selling everything from groceries and fruit and veg to paraffin. At one time it was managed by James Henry Hann on behalf of (I believe) Mrs Stone. When he and the owner retired, it was taken on by his son, Edmond Philip Hann
It was sold to Mr Bridgeman in the 1960s and became a hairdresser's shop, before becoming a domestic dwelling - the Cash Stores and Post Office's businesses having been combined in a new shop that stands to the left of the photo, across what was the main road through the village. This too has now closed. Forking, just north of the village, left to Toot Hill and right to nowadays rapidly-expanding North Baddesley, it was dissected by construction of the main south coast motorway, the M27, and has been replaced as the major village road by the formerly-peaceful Rownhams Lane (past Salisbury Villas) which has now become a major commuter route to Southampton
