What was believed at one time to be John Hook Hann's house in Stoke Abbott taken in late C19th (Possibly John Hook Hann in front of house)
Also known as "The Barracks", it was recorded on the 1841 Tithe Map as Plot 539 (between 538 owned by Arthur Hann (his 2nd cousin twice removed) and 540 owned by George Hann senior (1st cousin twice removed)© 2003 Jennifer M Jordan - I have since discovered that this house is what is now known as Raleigh Cottage, whereas reference to the 1891 census shows John Hook Hann as living at the other end of the village in Plot 531 on the Tithe Map. Godfrey French's book on Stoke Abbott states that the 'Manor House', now Lewesdon House, was 'built on a site formerly owned by Mr Hann the builder'. John Hook Hann died in 1899 and in his will said that his trustees (his brother WIlliam Wallace Hann, builder, of London and Richard Rendell, sawyer of Stoke Abbott) should sell all his assets and set up a trust for his family. By 1901 his widow and children were living in Charmouth. The 'Manor House' may well have been built on top of John Hook Hann's old house and yard. If however the photo is older, it is possible that photo is indeed of John Hook Hann, as in 1841 members of the Hann family owned the cottages on either side of this one
